Recreation
Albury offers a host of recreational facilities for young and old, we have listed here some facilities and clubs that operate in Albury.
Albury Bowling Club
AN INTRODUCTION TO ALBURY BOWLING CLUB
The club was founded in 1924 but before that date the green had been a recreation area for the villagers. Various sports were played on the green before it became a bowling club, such as quoits, tossing horseshoes, etc. The old village club house, which had a bar, billiards and other facilities, is now a private house (Thistledew).
When the bowling club started there were no changing facilities or pavilion but eventually an old and redundant chicken house was obtained and with some work from members it was turned into a very basic club house.
However we wanted something better and, after about 20 years of trying, finally managed in 1998 to get plans accepted to build a first class pavilion and construct a large car park. It took a further five years of very hard work to raise the substantial amount of money needed by a combination of grants and loans and to do the necessary building work. We received nothing from the Lottery but got good support from the Foundation for Sport and Arts, SITA, Guildford Borough Council, Awards for All, Albury Parish Council, Albury Estate, Albury Trust, Surrey County Playing Fields Association, English Bowling Association, and others, plus fund raising by our own members. Most observers agree that the new facilities, which were opened officially by the Mayor of Guildford in August 2003, are among the best in the Guildford/Godalming area and possibly in Surrey. As well as an excellent bowling green and patio the club has a good bar and is open all year round. In the Winter there are many social activities and the indoor sport of short mat bowling is played. The club is in the SHAB short mat league but also plays friendly matches in which beginners are welcome. The social activities include live jazz bands, country and western bands, 60s nights, quiz nights, Christmas parties, race nights, barbecues, darts, etc.
Bowls is a sport suitable for all ages and in which the sexes can compete equally. If you have never tried it or seen the club's splendid facilities in Church Lane you are invited to telephone Hon. Secretary, Stuart Barnes (01483 502038) or the Captain, Brian Frost (01483 203707) and we will be delighted to show you round.
As well as bowling, bar, kitchen, etc., the club began a very successful series of New Orleans jazz evenings in September 2003. More recently we started Country and Western evenings. We get a different live band most months and our support is growing. A friendly club atmosphere prevails at the sessions and many people take to the dance floor. However our licensing conditions mean that we have to restrict the audience to members and their bona fide guests only.
If any of the above takes your fancy then please call one of the above people. You can be sure of a pleasant reception if you wish to join, and, if you would like to learn to play outdoor or indoor bowls, then coaching is available. You will be welcome even if you wish only to take part in our social activities (social membership only £7.50 p.a.). Full bowling membership is £70 p.a. If you wish to try bowling without committing yourselves to full membership, social membership allows you to play up to five times before deciding whether to become a full member. We have friendly club nights from about 6 p.m. every Wednesday and all are invited.

Cricket & Football
Overall another very successful year for the club. We have firmly established ourselves as a central part of the village which was a key objective 5 years ago. This year the big news for the club is most definitely the installation of the new triple bay nets. This facility is open to everyone and has been very generously funded by Foundation for sport and also a very large grant from the council using section 106 money. The club is extremely grateful for these grants and is now able to provide the right level of facilities for the members of the club.
Senior crickets had a good season both teams finishing mid table in the Surrey Downs League which seems to be the right standard for the players we attract.
ON the colts side we are attracting 140+ players ranging from U7 to U13/U14's. These age groups are playing in the West Surrey Youth league.
All age groups are now receiving coaching from ECB Level 1 coaches draw from Dads, and a Mum from within the club.
The season starts on 26th April and we look forward to a great season.
Other highlights include our annual dinner - last year we attracted 160 guests to our first combined dinner which took place on the heath for the first time. This year we hope to have even more ( we actually got 210!!!)
A few headlines from Albury Eagles 2007-08:
160 players.
2 teams at U6&U7 ( friendlies only).
3 teams at U8 Tadworth League
3 teams at U9 Tadworth League - Griffins won their league, winning 17 from 18 games.
2 teams at U10 Tadworth League
1 teams at U11 Horsham League Div C lying 2nd of 8, look good for promotion.
1 team at U12 Horsham League, promoted from Div B into Div A.
1 team at U13 Horsham League, finished 4th of 9 teams.
1 team at U14 Horsham League, looking good for promotion.
12 league teams have operated almost entirely on the Heath, quite a headache now to ensure there is enough space for training and matches for all.
We have only used outside pitches three times at Wonersh, and once at Alfold.
Plenty of parental involvement, and each side has a qualified coach, adhering to FA Charter Standard (awarded May 2005)
Next season looks like being even busier, as we look to using Wonersh and Bramley pitches on a more regular basis with five 11-a-side teams operating at U11 through to U15. In 2-3 years time, the keenest players of these teams will be forming adult side(s) to represent Albury FC in local leagues.
